Central portugal has a rich diversity of freshwater species, some of which may be unfamiliar to the UK & Northern European angler. These include black bass, carp, barbel, trout, tench, boga, chub, zander, pike, crucian carp, and perca sol. Of particular note are the five species of barbel which are found in rivers and lakes (barragems), but the big one and most sought after is the Iberian Barbel (Barbus Comida) which can reach weights in excess of 15 kilos, often caught using spinner baits. Generally speaking, fish in Portugal are much harder fighters than their counterparts in northern europe so tackle should be stepped-up to allow for this. |
